At Balanced Bodes, we offer expert deep tissue massage services to realign your muscle and tissue layers, while relieving pain and restoring movement.
Deep tissue massage is different to standard massage therapy. While standard massage aims to relax you, deep tissue massage is used to treat specific problems, including:
- chronic pain
- muscle spasm and tension
- reduced movement
- sports injuries
- whiplash (e.g. from car accidents)
- Repetitive strain injury (RSI) (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome)
- problems with posture
- pain from ostearthritis
- Fibromyalgia (musculoskeletal pain, stiffness and tenderness)
- Muscle tension or spasm
What is deep tissue massage for?
Deep tissue massage is very effective at treating areas of the body that are extremely tense and contracted—including stiff necks, sore shoulders, and tightness in the lower back. It shares some of the strokes and techniques that are used in relaxation massage therapy, but deep tissue massage uses slower movement and deeper pressure and concentrates on areas of tension, stiffness and pain.
How does deep tissue massage work?
If you have suffered an injury or have chronic muscle tension, this will often cause adhesions. These are bands of rigid and painful tissue that form in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block your circulation, limit movement, and cause pain and inflammation.
Deep tissue massage breaks down adhesions in your body to restore normal movement and relive pain. How does this happen? Your deep tissue massage therapist will use direct and deep pressure across the grain of the muscles to release tension.
Is deep tissue massage painful?
Because deep tissue massage requires a lot of pressure to break down adhesions, you may experience some discomfort and pain during the treatment. This is normal. However, it is important that you tell your massage therapist if you experience soreness or pain outside of your comfort range or pain that doesn’t feel ‘right’.
After a deep tissue massage you will normally experience some stiffness or pain, but it usually dissipates within a day or two. In some instances, your massage therapist may suggest that you apply an ice or heat pack to certain areas following the massage.
