Salon Pas Heat Patches

Salonpas(R) pain relief patches are adhesive topical analgesic patches which are sold over the counter as nonprescription topical pain relief.  Salonpas(R) is manufactured in Japan by Hisamitsu, founded in 1857. Salonpas topical pain relief patches are sold to alleviate minor aches and pains of joints and muscles associated with arthritis, simple backache, strains and sprains.

*Active ingredients: Methyl salicylate 10% and Menthol 3%, camphor 1.2%.    Inactive ingredients: Butylated Hydroxytoluene; Hydrogenated Rosin Glycerol Ester; Maleated Rosin Glycerin Ester; Natural Rubber; Perfume; Polybutene; Polyisobutene; Silicon Dioxide; Starch Grafted Acrylate; Titanium Dioxide; Tocopherol Acetate; Zinc Oxide.

Methyl salicylate is known popularly as oil of wintergreen. Oil of wintergreen is a plant product from a species of plants known as wintergreens. Menthol is an organic compound made from the peppermint plant; however, due to insufficient availability of a natural plant supply, they may be synthesized in the laboratory from available mint oils.

*Direction for Use: Peel off the film backing on the patch, apply to a clean area directly over the painful area.  It is recommended to consult with a physician if pregnant before use.  Also consult your pediatrician if a child is under 12 years of age.  After 8 hours the old patch should be removed and replaced with a new one if still necessary.

*Pain Relief:  The Salonpas patch is used for temporary relief of mild pain, acting as a counterirritant.  A counterirritant is just that-it may cause a hot sensation on the skin which diverts the pain sensation; that is the mind can only receive so many pain signals at once. The counterirritant does not act upon the central nervous system as does an opiate.

*Contraindications: Because it contains a type of aspirin it should not be worn if the patient has an allergy to aspirin.
